It was one of the most thrilling finishes in the Japanese Derby history when Deep Brillante and Fenomeno got to the line this afternoon at Tokyo. Deep Brillante beat Fenomeno by the smallest official margin of a nose.
A 3/4-length behind Fenomeno, Tosen Homareboshi was third with another neck away favorite World Ace fourth. A neck further back, Gold Ship finished fifth in the field of 18.
A 100-meter out, Deep Brillante took a clear lead. Fenomeno swiftly closed in on the outside, but his late effort did not prevail.

The stage is set for the Tokyo Yushun(knowns as the Japanese Derby), held on Sunday, May 27, 2012 at Tokyo. A total of 18 colts will compete the premier classic.
The possible major players are Gold Ship and World Ace, who finished first and second, respectively, in the Satsuki Sho(Japanese 2000 Guineas).
Gold Ship returns to Tokyo where he won the Kyodo News Service Hai earlier this season. World Ace could produce an explosive late surge at the long Tokyo homestretch.
The post time for the Japanese Derby will be at 3:40 p.m.

Gentildonna made a Oka Sho - Oaks double when she won the Yushu Himba(Japanese Oaks) this afternoon.
Yuga Kawada rode a waiting race and Gentildonna came from far behind to win the Oaks race. At around 200 meters from home, she left the rest standing and drew away to post a 5-length victory.
Among the main contenders, Gentildonna would be most unlikely to stay the 2,400-meter Oaks trip on the papers, but she demonstrated a powerful late stride at the extended distance.
